Passcode and recovery

I forgot my passcode

Use your recovery key: the 32-character code shown when you created your vault (groups like XXXX-XXXX). Without the passcode and without the recovery key, the vault cannot be opened by anyone, including us — that is what keeps it private.

I lost my recovery key

If you can still unlock your vault, open Settings › Recovery key and enter your vault passcode to see it again. If you think someone else has seen it, tap Create a new recovery key: the old one stops working at once. For extra safety, also export everything to Files (Settings › Export all to Files).

Why can’t you reset my passcode?

Your files are encrypted with a key derived from your passcode on your device. We never see it, so there is nothing for us to reset. Any app that can “reset” your vault for you can also read it.

Phones and backups

How do I move my vault to a new iPhone?

Today the reliable way is: on the old phone, Settings › Export all to Files, move the files to the new phone (AirDrop, a computer or a drive), then add them to Hushbox on the new phone. Encrypted backup and restore with your recovery key is planned.

How do I move my photos to a computer?

In Hushbox, open Settings › Export all to Files and save the files to a folder. Then, in the Files app, select them and share. To a Mac: choose AirDrop, which encrypts the transfer. To a Windows PC: save them to iCloud Drive and download them from iCloud on the PC, or plug in a USB-C drive and copy them to it in Files. Hushbox doesn't offer Wi-Fi transfer through a web browser on purpose: on a shared network, those transfers can be read by others.

Is my vault in my iPhone backup?

Yes, as encrypted data. The device key your passcode relies on is never backed up, so a restored vault on a different phone needs your recovery key.

Does deleting the app delete my photos?

Yes. The vault lives inside the app. Export anything you want to keep before deleting Hushbox.

Using Hushbox

Are my photos reduced in quality?

No. Hushbox stores the original file exactly as it was, and Export gives you the same file back with its name and date.

Should I delete the originals from Photos?

Hushbox offers to, after it has read the vault copy back successfully. Deleted photos stay in Photos › Recently Deleted for 30 days; empty that album to remove them for good.

What is a decoy passcode? (Pro)

A second passcode that opens a separate vault with harmless content. Put a few ordinary photos in it so it looks used.

What is Intruder photo? (Pro)

After two wrong passcodes in a row, the front camera takes one photo. It is encrypted so that only your unlocked vault can show it, and you see it the next time you open Hushbox.

Purchases

How do I restore my purchase on a new device?

Settings › Restore purchases, signed in with the same Apple ID.

How do I cancel or get a refund?

Subscriptions are managed in your Apple ID settings. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

What happens if my subscription ends?

Everything already in your vault stays accessible and exportable. You just can’t add more than 100 items or use Pro features.
